Season 1, Episode 5 - The Star Trail

We begin in typical western style…a gunfight! Curly Troy is the bully working on Vic Stoddard.  He is the typical coward who must bully people to feel like a man.  Vic Stoddard dies trying to defend his rights to his land.  Curly is so bold that he mails Vic’s letter to Jess after he kills Vic.  Next, we see Jess and Slim chatting about “saying goodbye”.  The conversation is a great tribute to their growing friendship…Slim tells him “not to forget where he started from.”

Once at Rock Springs Jess learns of Vic’s death from Ma the owner of the boarding house.  He is very upset and learns that Curly was the one who killed Vic.  He heads to the saloon loaded for bear.  He calls Curly but is interrupted by Sheriff Hatch.

As in most westerns there is a saloon girl involved.  Our gal is Evie, and she is the typical saloon girl. She wants out and plans to use whoever it takes to help her. She will be the undoing of Sheriff Hatch.

The story continues as Curly calls Jess out again just outside of Ma’s place.  Sheriff Hatch once again intervenes and tries hard to defuse the situation but, in the end, kills Curly.  Jess is beholdin to the Sheriff and is a little star struck.  The next day he goes and tells the sheriff, “I came here because I thought I was needed, maybe I’d like to stay for the same reason,” he becomes the Deputy Sheriff.

After learning of Curly’s death Evie lets the Sheriff know exactly where he stands with her.  She feels he stole her future, and she is going to leave town as soon as she gets enough money.  She makes it very clear that he has no chance with her unless he has money.

Jess is settling in at his new home and job.  As luck would have it Monday morning there is a bank robbery.  Jess gets his man and during a struggle the robber gets killed.  The sheriff gets his man (the money man) but one robber gets away. As the sheriff is gathering the horses his mind begins to wander about all that money.  He sees it as a way to keep Evie and he does something he would normally never do…. He steals the money and hides is on the trail.  Jess, Hatch, and the banker are discussing the problem the next day at the bank. Everything seems bleak for the town.

That evening Sheriff Hatch sees Evie getting into the coach to leave town.  He tells her about the money.  She is very pleased and they make plans to leave soon to spend their lives together.

The next day Sheriff Hatch tells Jess that he and Evie have patched things up and they are going to be leaving.  He offers Jess the Sheriff’s job.

Things change quickly by Jess’s room being torn apart, he goes out to Hatches place to tell him.  There he kills robber #3 and realizes that Hatch must have the money.  Sadly, Sheriff Hatch gets killed because he chooses Evie over doing what’s right.

The final scene Jess tells Slim “I found out one thing Slim, it’s not all in who needs me, it’s what I need too. Let’s get on home.”
