Season 1, Episode 9 -
The episode begins with Arnold DeWalt and his crew returning to their ranch after a trail drive. After being away from his ranch DeWalt is excited to see his wife, Laurel. He doesn’t know that Laurel is planning to leave him. When Laurel sees the men returning she removes money from the safe, sneaks out of the house and begins to ride away. DeWalt sees her leaving and is confused. He had no idea anythig was wrong. He ytries to stop Laurel but she is determined and shoots him then mounts her horse and runs.
At the Sherman Relay Station, Jess is finally learning to swim and Andy is teaching him. Slim finds them and jokes with them about how they need to get back to the ranch and do their chores and prepare for the incoming stage.
When the stage arrives the last passenger out is Laurel, who upon seeing Jess, falls into his arms and states she has been searching for him. She begs for his help. Jess, in revealing an earlier relationship with Laurel asks her to leave as he wants to stay at the relay station. Laurel persuades Jess to help her travel to Tumavaca. While planning the trip, Slim tries to dissuade Jess from leaving. Jess explains to Slim how he feels it is his fault that Laurel now needs his help.
DeWalt is determined to bring Laurel back so he hires three men, brothers, Josh and Roy, and a man called Garret, to find Laurel and return her safely to the ranch. He states he does not care if they travel together or separately, just find his wife.
Jess and Laurel stop to rest and Jess explains how he misses the relay station and how he belonged there. Laurel claims she loves Jess and causes Jess discomfort because he feels it is wrong that he still wants her to love him.
Meanwhile back at DeWalt’s ranch, DeWalt prepares to pay the hands for the trail drive and discovers that Laurel stole almost $65,000. He knows the men he hired to find her will want the money once they discover she has it. He is desperately wants to find her to protect her from the men he hired. His foreman reveals that he knew where she was going and that she was going to meet a man called Montero Rias in Tumavaca.
Back at the relay station, Slim tries to explain to Andy that Jess may not return since he has left with a woman this time. They are interrupted by the brothers, Josh and Roy, who demand, at gunpoint, information about Laurel.
At the campsite of Jess and Laurel, Laurel goes to Jess. In the morning, Jess is in a teasing mood with Laurel when they are surprised by the two brothers. When Laurel is told that DeWalt paid them to find her, she offers to pay them more. Suddenly, one brother then the other is shot by Garret. Jess and Laurel escape.
Slim is now searching for Jess and finds the two murdered cowboys and rides on.
Away from the threat, Jess stops and demands that Laurel tell him what is going on. Laurel admits that she used him, how she stole the money and is going to meet Rias in Tumavaca. Jess prepares to return her to DeWalt when he is shot by Garret. Laurel rides off with Garret chasing her. Slim arrives and cares for Jess. They then ride on towards Tumavaca.
Laurel arrives at Rias’ ranch only to find DeWalt is already there. She tells both DeWalt and Rias how she finds them both weak and stupid. She wants a real man. DeWalt’s foreman accuses her of only taking, never giving. While they are talking Garret steals the money and takes off.
Slim and Jess see Garret and pursue him. A gunfight at a shack ensues and Garret is killed. DeWalt and his foreman arrive at the shack, followed shortly after by Laurel. Laurel, realising that she has burnt her bridges with Rias tell DeWalt she is sorry and wants to go home with him. He is disgusted and tells her they are finished, then he leaves without her.
Slim and Jess head back home.
