Season 1, Episode 10 - The General Must Die

Whit Malone sits quietly whittling on a piece of wood in the telegram office, waiting for a telegram to arrive. He has been waiting 2 days!

Finally his telegram arrives and the operator hands it to him. While Malone is reading it the operator recites what the message says - laughs and says to Malone “See I have a good memory”.

Malone draws his gun and replies “You sure have”, then he shoots the operator!

Whit Malone is headed by stagecoach to Laramie to see his old army buddy Slim Sherman. Wheb the coach arrives at the Sherman ranch Slim has no idea Whit is aboard. The driver tells Slim that tomorrow General William Sherman is coming through on a special coach - it is supposed to be a secret.

Slim continues to work on the team and while he has his back to the coach Wit Malone steps out. He walks to wards Slim and yells  “Go for it Yank”. Slim spins around and Molone draws his gun!!

While Andy and Jonesy are shocked Slim smiles and greets his old friend. Later that evening they reminisce and tie one on telling their stories.

Slim is unaware of the deceit that Whit has planned. He tells Slim about his ranch in Montana and invites Slim and Andy to visit. He tries to persuade them to go tomorrow - even telling Slim he will stay at Slims ranch while Slim and Andy go to Montana for some fishing. Slim half agrees and says that Jess is coming back so they should be able to manage. Whit is curious about Jess!

Later that night Whit signals Colonel Brandon that things are a go.

The next morning Slim with quite a hangover has forgotten all about going to Montana and lets Andy know that they can’t get away right now.  Whit was concerned that Slim wouldn’t go.  While they are having breakfast Brandon and his two men appear. Brandon tells Slim that he and his men want to wait for the stage into Laramie as their horses are tired. Slim discourages him and suggests it would be faster to ride on into Laramie instead of waiting as the stage does not arrive until 4pm and it will be full. Brandon insists and Whit comes out of the house, gun drawn and says, “Go for it Yank.” Slim is confused but quickly realizes his friend is up to no good.

Slim and Jonesy discuss the dilemma and figure Jess is their only hope.

Brandon and his men settle in at the ranch waiting for General Sherman to arrive.  Meanwhile Whit is on the look out for Jess, when he rides in. Slim tries to convince them that it is just a stranger passing by, however Whit and Jonesy go out to meet him.  In true Jonesy style he spins a yarn about hoof and mouth disease at the ranch and suggests he leaves to avoid his horse catching the disease. Malone asks him his name and Jess tell him it is Johnny Hart.

Still skeptical Whit lets him go but inside the house asks to see Jess’s stuff.  He puts 2 and 2 together and rides off to kill Jess.  Jess tries to get away but is wounded. Thinking Jess is dead Malone goes back to the ranch.

Slim tries to convince Whit to call things off.  Whit tells him about the dummy stage coming through at 4:00 with secret service agents. He needs Slim to handle that stage and make sure no one knows there is trouble at the ranch.  A wounded Jess comes back to the ranch. He signals Slim to go to the barn, Slim fills him in on what is going on and they devise a plan to warn the General of trouble. However, Jess is discovered while trying to whitewash a warning to the stage on the side of the barn and is captured.  Meanwhile they wait for the first stage. It finally arrives and the secret service inspect the ranch…one agent notices the whitewash but doesn’t put things together and they leave.

With the first coach gone Brandon gets down to business. Brandon is ready to get rid of all the witnesses and Slim buys some time by telling Whit the full story of how Brandon tried to be a hero and got a lot of people killed.  Whit gets angry and attacks Slim and a fight starts. Jess grabs a gun and kills Brandon and one of the men, Whit tries to shoot Slim but gets the better of him and kills him. The rest of Brandon’s men are killed or captured.

Shortly afterwards Sherman’s coach arrives and leaves with him never knowing he was in danger.
