Season 1, Episode 12 - Man of God

Father Elliott, on a mission of peace finds 6 troopers killed by the Sioux, at Lodge Pole Creek Relay Station. There is one survivor who is badly wounded. Before he dies he tells father Elliot that the Sioux had Henry rifles and he asks Elliot to go to Laramie and tell Colonel Carlington.

Before seeing Carlington in Laramie father Elliot comes across the Sherman ranch It is night time and Slim is teaching Andy a life lesson telling him that he can’t let fear rule his life. He sends Andy out into the night to gather kindling for the fire and while gathering wood Andy sees the dark shadow of Father Elliot. In fear he calls for Slim who along with Jess rushes outside where Father Elliot comes forward and introduces himself.

During the course of the evening he relays to Slim and Jess about the soldiers he found at Lodge Pole Creek, and that he wants to see Colonel Carlington in Laramie to relay the message he got from the dead lieutenant. He also tell them his original mission is to go to The Yellowstone to meet with Sitting Bull!

The following morning Jess and Slim question Father Elliot’s wisdom in going to see Sitting Bull, but Elliot is adamant that he must go and try to bring peace. He asks Jess to draw him a map showing him the way to the Yellowstone.

Before father Elliot leaves soldiers arrive to escort him to Laramie. He asks how they knew he was there and is told that Colonel Carlington will explain everything.

Once in Laramie Father Elliot and the Colonel have words about the padre’s wishes, but the padre is more determined than ever to go.

Slim and Jess go to Laramie concerned about the padre…hoping to convince him not to go to The yellowstone. He asks Slim and Jess to be his guide.  Slim cannot go as he has to go to Cheyenne and Jess feels the mission is doomed so declines. As they cannot help him Father Elliot decides to look elsewhere.

Meanwhile the men selling the Henry rifles to the Sioux learn about the padre and devise a plan to stop him themselves. They send one of their men, a hired gun called Charlie Root, to hire on as the padre’s guide - and kill him before he gets to Sitting Bull.

The padre and Charlie stop by the ranch to let Jess and Slim know he is on his way.

After a long day and finally getting the herd settled for the night, Jess arrives home. The sheriff stops by and lets them know that Charlie Root is a hired gun and wants to kill the padre. Jonesy goats Jess into following the padre and trying to save him.

On the trail, the padre lets Charlie know that he realized from early on the trail that Charlie planned to kill him. Charlie stays calm and denies it.

Meanwhile, Jess has picked up their trail and is not far behind them.

Charlie makes his one and only attempt to kill the padre on the flat where he has set up an ambush. The padre senses the ambush and refuses to proceed. Charlie attacks the padre; they fight and during the struggle Charlie is killed by his own trap. The padre is saddened and takes time to bury Charlie.  Jess comes across the grave and realizes he is close.

Meanwhile the gun runners are making their way to the meeting place with their guns and ammo to trade with the Indians.

Eventually Jess finds the padre clinging for dear life on the side of a cliff where he had fallen. He pulls him to safety, and they discuss their chances. Jess tries to persuade the padre to go back but he refuses He tells Jess he truly believes God needs him to fulfill his mission.

Suddenly Jess sees signal fires and they realize they are surrounded by Indians and there is no way out. Jess is not one to quit and he tells the padre they will move forward. They travel a little way and see the Indian encampment on the other side of the river. At about the same time they spot the gunrunners camp. It is getting late and they know that neither they or the gunrunners can cross the river until the next day so they make camp for the night.

The next morning Jess wakes and discovers the padre has left.  He sees him with a torch heading towards the gunrunner’s hideout…the padre throws the torch and destroys the ammunition, killing one of the gunrunners in the explosion. The remaining three gunrunners are awakened and go after the padre who is running back towards Jess.

Jess gives him cover so he can reach safety. In the gunfight that ensues Jess kills the remaining three gunrunners as Sitting Bull watches. Having seen the Padre blow up the ammunition he realizes the padre is no ordinary man. He tells his chief that he will speak to him. The padre asks Jess to take the few final steps with him, but Jess tells him that he will feel better staying where he can to protect the padre if needed.

As Sitting Bull watches the padre walk toward them, he says “He has courage, he carries the sign of the great Spirit, perhaps he is the white man that we have been waiting for, a white man who can be trusted.”  Jess watches with amazement as the padre goes on his way!
