Season 1, Episode 8 - General Delivery

General Delivery opens with Ed Caulder (Rod Cameron) goading a man into a gunfight. We soon find that Caulder is a paid killer on his way to Laramie.

The Laramie townspeople recognize Caulder upon his arrival. His appearance immediately stirs up concerns about who in town he has been hired to kill. The sheriff tells Caulder to “keep riding.”

Jess rides up to the Sherman ranch and walks past Andy and Jonesy to his gun stashed in the chimney - the pearl handle model he wore when he first arrived in Laramie. Jonesy finds out quickly that Jess thinks Caulder is in town for him, and he plans on going into town to face Caulder.

Caulder is in the Laramie saloon when Jess walks in, ready for confrontation. The two have a history, and Jess is on edge, warily anticipating being “needled and prodded” into a gunfight.

Just then, the stagecoach arrives, and Jess walks with Caulder to check the mail. The townspeople wait anxiously to determine whether it is Jess’s name on the letter. “It’s not you,” Caulder says. After Jess leaves, Caulder asks the townspeople, “which way to the Sherman Ranch?”

Slim is angry at Jess when he makes it back home. He encourages him to “get away for a few days.” He tells him he “look(s) a little green around the gills,” and Jess agrees. Slim sends him to Cheyenne “to get a look at the new breeding stock.”

As he approaches the Sherman Ranch, Caulder steps in one of the cougar traps set by Andy and Slim. Before passing out, he fires a shot for help. Jonesy, Slim, and Andy bring Caulder into the house and doctor his leg, unaware of who he is. Andy befriends Caulder and Slim is hospitable toward him until he discovers his identity.

A group of men rides out to the ranch from Laramie. They want Caulder. Slim stands up to them, refusing to let them look for Caulder because it is obvious they intend him harm.

The next day Andy makes Caulder a crutch to help get him on his feet so he can leave. They talk and Andy tells him he doesn’t understand killing for money.

Later on Jonesy works on one of his liniment brews in the barn while keeping Andy busy and avoiding Caulder. Andy goes into the barn, trips, knocking the boiling liniment mixture over. He hits his head and is knocked unconscious. Meanwhile the liniment mixture sets fire to some hay in the barn. Caulder sees the smoke and hobbles into the barn and rescues Andy.

Slim tells Caulder he is indebted to him, to which he responds, “I guess that makes us about even, doesn’t it?” Caulder’s conscience clearly bothers him after all that has happened with Slim and Andy.

Sim decides it is time for Caulder to leave so he saddles his horse. Caulder refuses to go so Slim faces up to him. Caulder outdraws Slim but doesn’t pull the trigger. Caulder rides off after telling Slim that he doesn’t know why he didn’t kill him.

Jess rides in just as the gunman is leaving. Jess relays that Caulder is likely there to kill Slim. There are three rustlers that Slim testified against in a trial, whom Jess thinks have hired Caulder.

Slim knows that Caulder is going to Laramie to tell them the deal is off and he believes Caulder could be in danger. Slim tells Jess that he is going to help Caulder to which Jess protests but follows Slim’s lead.

They arrive in Laramie just in time to see Caulder being attacked by the 3 men so they run to help. In the gun battle that ensues the 3 men and Caulder are killed. Jess finds the general delivery letter Caulder had picked up in Laramie and gives it to Slim. Slim opens it and it has just two words on it - “Slim Sherman”.
