Season 1, Episode 3 -
This episode begins with the passengers, stage coach driver, and shotgun rider standing outside a broken down stagecoach. As they are waiting they see two Indians ride within view. The female passenger, Martha Chambers, panics, grabs a rifle and shoots one of the Indians. The group rushes to help the injured Indian and realize he is Takka, son of the Pawnee Chief Yellow Knife.
Meanwhile, back at the Sherman Ranch, the officer in charge of a cavalry unit is informing Slim and Jess that Pawnee Indians, led by Yellow Knife, have left their reservation to hunt buffalo and he warns them to stay out of their path. Slim concerned for their safety sends Jonesy and Andy to town.
The stage eventually arrives at the Relay Station, and Takka is taken inside where he can be helped. The passengers and crew of the stagecoach tell of the events that had occurred. The passengers, crew, and Slim and Jess who are concerned about the Indians attacking debate what to do.
Jess recognizes one of the passengers as Major Prescott, a former military officer who has been dishonorably discharged. The woman, Martha Chambers, who shot the Indian, Takka, is his companion on the stage.
Unexpectedly, Jonesy and Andy return because they are unable to get to town due to the Pawnee blocking the road. Everyone realizes they need to prepare to defend themselves.
The Indians make their first attack but only to test the strength of the ranch inhabitants.
Jess realises they need help so volunteers to ride out to find and bring back the cavalry. He feels he is the best person for the job as he had once been a dispatch rider.
Inside the ranch house, tensions increase and infighting starts. Mr. Bartholomew, who works for the railrod wants to dictate what to do, but Major Prescott and Slim have other ideas. They plan to go meet Yellow Knife to explain what happened to his son, and let him know they are trying to help. Unfortunately Takka dies so instead they have to tell Yellow Knife that is son is dead. They ask him to to leave in peac, but Yellow Knife is angry and wants the murderer of his son. Slim and the Major refuse.
Upon Slim and Major Prescott’s return to the ranch house, Martha Chambers explains how she had supported the Major when he came up on charges of not going to the aid of another unit that was under attack by the Indians, for which he was acquitted. Her husband accused her of having an affair with the Major, and he was dishonorably discharged for that reason.
While waiting for the next attack, Andy asks Jonesy if they will survive and what it is like to die. The others hear the discussion.
The Major stays calm and directs the others. While he discusses with Slim the possibility of killing Chief Yellow Knife to stop the battle, a shot is heard and Slim and the Major discover that Andy has shot at an Indian who tried to set fire to the ranch. While they are distracted Martha Chambers runs off to surrender to the Indians in an effort to save the others. However Slim stops her and brings her back.
Slim suggests that if he goes under a white flag to talk with Chief Yellow Knife, he may have a chance to kill him and save the others. The Major does not want Slim to risk his life so he knocks Slim out and goes in his place. On his attempt to shoot Chief Yellow Knife, he is killed. Slim, who had followed, succeeds in killing the Chief and the Pawnee leave.
Jess returned to the Relay Station with the cavalry. The stagecoach, with the surviving passengers, including Martha Chambers, leaves the relay station. Andy tells Jess that the Major Prescott was the bravest man he ever met.
