Wagon Train Overview


The campfires were not actual wood fires and were fuelled by propane.  This made the flames easy to control and turn on and off as needed.

Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine appeared in 5 episodes of Wagon Train including the first and last episodes.


The 1970’s movie A Man Called Horse starring Richard Harris  was filmed first as a Wagon Train episode with the same title starring Ralph Meeker as Horse.

It aired 26th March 1958


John Wayne played a small part as General William Sherman a Season 4 episode called “The Colter Craven Story” and was billed in the credits as Michael Morris.   The story was written and directed by John Ford.


Robert had to reshoot a close-up scene with Rhonda Fleming because he was looking at her “dress” instead of her eyes.


Actors were never allowed to actually drive the wagons for safety reasons.  Skilled wranglers were hidden behind the actor whose hands were on the reins.  However, the wrangler was controlling the horses.    


While shooting a Native America raiding party, Robert put on an Indian costume, jumped on a horse, and joined the raiding party.  When director William Witney found out he was very angry and proceeded to yell Robert.  However, the person he was yelling at wasn’t Robert.  Robert was on the horse behind him.



A wagon train typically travelled at a speed of 2 miles an hour and usually covered around 10 miles a day.


The Marshall Mansion shown at the beginning of the Myra Marshall story was the mansion used in the Munsters TV series.

Beverley Owen who guest starred as  Grace Marshall also played the only human member in the Munster family, Marilyn Munster

The series was inspired by the 1950 epic Wagon Master which featured Ward Bond and was directed by John Ford

Wagon Train peaked in the 1961-62  television season at number 1 in Neilsen ratings
